Short-Term Ingestion of Lipid-Rich Meal with High Saturated Fatty Acids Composition may Reduce Activity of Lecithin: Cholesterol Acyl Transferase (LCAT)
Abstract
The study assessed the influence of short-term challenge with lipid-rich meal on activity of lecithin:cholesterol acyl transferase in human volunteers. Thirty apparently healthy human volunteers were recruited for the study. After 12 hour-overnight fast, they were challenged with lipid-rich meal. Fasting and 2-hour postpandrial sera were analyzed for total and free cholesterol concentrations spectrophotometrically. Rate of disappearance of free cholesterol was calculated and used as an index for estimation of activity of lecithin:cholesterol acyl transferase. Ingestion of lipid-rich meal caused significant (p≤0.05) increase in serum concentration of total cholesterol. The rate of disappearance of free cholesterol was reduced following ingestion of the meal. Short-term consumption of lipid-rich meal caused reduction in activity of lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase in the human volunteers. Keywords: Lipids, short-term, diet, fatty acids, LCAT.
